David Dishes His Guilty PleasuresFri Aug 31, 2018
Full disclaimer: this blog post is brought to you by fermented grape juice.
“Guilty pleasures” implies we should feel guilty about liking these things. But I can assure you that I don’t feel guilty about liking anything on this list -- sometimes it’s those guilty pleasures that help get us through the toughest of days. Here are my top guilty (but definitely proud) pleasures!
1. 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days
For those of you cultured enough to have no idea what 90 Day Fiancé is, it is a show where couples with a K-1 visa have 90 days to decide whether they want to get married before one is deported. While you might think that’s ridiculous enough, the real gem is the spinoff, Before the 90 Days, where couples travel halfway around the world to meet their girlfriend/boyfriend for the first time with the plans of getting married. It’s basically Catfish but international. Stop everything you’re doing and add it to your DVR.
Growing up, my mom always had QVC on TV. I don’t think she ever actually bought anything from it -- she just enjoyed window shopping from home. Because of that, I still occasionally put QVC on TV just to relax. No, I have not ordered anything. Yet. Yes, Martha Stewart has the best segments.
3. Diet Coke
You know how Diet Coke can supposedly strip rust off a car? Whenever I hear someone say that, it just makes me really want a cold Diet Coke. I cannot keep it in my apartment because I will actually drink the entire can/bottle/case/delivery truck. I also crave it immediately after I teach class. Luckily Zengo does not keep them in the fridge. Yet.
4. Vanessa Hudgens - “Sneakernight”
It’s a bop. The end.
5. Ranch dressing
I firmly believe that there is nothing savory that is not enhanced by adding ranch. If you haven’t dipped pizza into ranch dressing, then can you even say you’ve really lived? Whenever I order a salad, it’s just because I want a socially acceptable food vessel on which to put ranch. I’ve already petitioned the USDA to recognize it as a vegetable.
